Large Kashmiri Copper-Alloy Incense Burner with Pierced Mask Panel and Serpent Motifs – Srinagar, c. 1900

Description

A large handcrafted incense burner or ceremonial vessel made of copper alloy, attributed to Srinagar in the Kashmir region and dating from approximately the late 19th to early 20th century.

The spherical body stands on a broad raised foot and is fitted with a large arched carrying handle. Its exterior is extensively decorated with an elaborate combination of serpents, scale patterns, symbolic faces, floral elements and recurring geometric borders.

The front features a removable circular pierced panel depicting a symbolic mask flanked by two symmetrically arranged serpents. The openwork construction allows air and incense smoke to pass through, consistent with its intended function as an incense burner. The reverse is also decorated with a related mask and serpent composition.

The eyes and selected details are embellished with small blue, red and dark-coloured cabochons. Both sides of the body are fitted with raised movable panels decorated with finely engraved human and floral motifs. The rim, handle and foot are further enriched with repeating geometric bands.

The interior reveals traditional construction from shaped and joined metal sections. An old label attached beneath the base reads “INDIEN / SRINAGAR,” supporting its historical attribution to Srinagar.

An aged patina and areas of oxidation consistent with the object’s age are visible throughout. All details of its appearance and present condition are clearly shown in the photographs.
