magnificent large-scale Japanese six-panel folding screen (Byobu) featuring an elegant composition of seasonal flowers, birds, and natural landscapes, signed by the Japanese painter Maruyama Suijo (丸山翠城).

The six individual paintings form a harmonious celebration of nature throughout the seasons. Various birds are depicted among flowering trees, peonies, hydrangeas, grasses, streams and waterfalls. Among the beautifully rendered subjects are a white heron, quail, kingfisher, pheasant, small songbirds and a pair of colorful mandarin ducks.

Each bird is carefully painted with fine attention to plumage, posture and expression, while the surrounding flowers and landscapes are executed in delicate colors combined with expressive ink brushwork. Particularly attractive are the pink peonies, white blossoms, hydrangeas, flowing water and richly detailed pheasant.

The individual paintings are mounted against a brilliant gold-colored ground, framed by an elegant blue-gray brocade border and black lacquered outer frame. The contrast between the luminous gold background and the softly colored paintings gives the screen a refined and luxurious appearance.

The work bears the artist's signature and red seal on the individual compositions.

With an impressive fully extended width of approximately 352 cm and a height of 175 cm, this is a substantial decorative piece with a strong visual presence. It would make an exceptional centerpiece for a large interior, hotel, restaurant, gallery, traditional Japanese room, or collection of Japanese art.

The reverse side is finished in a simple deep blue tone.

Artist: Maruyama Suijō丸山翠城(1902-1975)
Suijo Maruyama was a Japanese artist and painter in the traditional Japanese style (*Nihonga*), hailing from Niigata Prefecture.

**Birthplace:** Maki-machi, Niigata Prefecture (present-day Nishikan Ward, Niigata City)
Known as a regional artist; records of his work appear in local reference materials such as the *Essa Shoga Meikan* (Directory of Calligraphy and Painting in Echigo and Sado).

His works—including *Nihonga* (such as landscapes and bird-and-flower paintings), hanging scrolls, and folding screens—circulate in the antiques market and at auctions. Hand-painted works depicting subjects like natural scenery and waterfalls, rendered with a delicate touch, have been preserved.
