Description from the seller
Chamba Figurines - Taraba State, Nigeria
The towering pair of figures is carved from wood and linked by a striking vertical rhythm. Slender, elongated torsos support large heads with summarily rendered features; the arms lie close to the body, forming angular diagonals. The legs are particularly striking: in a series of strong, zigzag-shaped volumes, they create an almost ornamental movement. Despite their formal similarities, the two figures differ in size, physiognomy, and gender characteristics. The reddish-brown, in places crusty, patina lends the surfaces a vibrant depth, marked by use.
The sculptures are attributed to the Chamba people of Taraba State, in the culturally diverse region south of the middle Benue River. Chamba figurines appear both individually and as male-female pairs. Historically documented examples were placed in sacred groves and could receive regular or occasional offerings in cults to ward off misfortune. Their meaning, however, was not uniform: Anthropomorphic sculptures of the Middle Benue could represent ancestors, a community of the deceased, or spiritual powers conceived as humanoids.
Literature (selection):
Richard Fardon / Christine Stelzig: Column to Volume: Formal Innovation in Chamba Statuary. London 2005.
Richard Fardon: Between God, the Dead and the Wild. Edinburgh 1990.
Marla C. Berns / Richard Fardon / Sidney L. Kasfir (eds.): Central Nigeria Unmasked. Los Angeles 2011.
Inv. No. MAZ26090
Informant: Wassiu
Height: 68 cm / 63 cm
