RARE PAIR OF JAPANESE PORCELAIN FOOTED BOWLS – ARITA / IMARI STYLE – HO-Ō PHOENIX & FLORAL DECOR

Beautiful matching pair of Japanese porcelain footed bowls, featuring an elegant scalloped, polylobed shape with a raised foot.

Each piece is finely decorated with a highly attractive polychrome Japanese design, centred around a magnificent Ho-ō bird, traditionally associated with the Phoenix, perched on a rock and surrounded by flowering branches.

The decoration is enriched with delicate flowers, foliage, butterflies and small birds in flight, creating a wonderfully balanced and harmonious composition.

The rim is particularly striking, featuring a continuous border of hand-painted red spiral motifs, combined with stylised cloud-like elements.

The colour palette is exceptionally attractive, combining cobalt blue, red, green, brown, grey and touches of gold, beautifully contrasted against the warm ivory-white porcelain ground.

The two pieces form a very attractive matching pair, with closely related and harmonious decoration. Their unusual scalloped shape and raised foot give them an elegant and distinctive appearance.

MARK & DETAILS

The underside of each bowl bears a blue hand-painted mark within a square, surrounded by a blue circular line around the foot.

The mark is particularly interesting and appears consistent with Japanese porcelain production. However, the exact interpretation of the mark has not been conclusively established.

The decoration and overall style are strongly evocative of Japanese Arita / Imari porcelain, particularly the traditional export wares combining blue, red, green and gold decoration with floral and bird motifs.

The dating is given as probable rather than definitive, as the exact workshop and production date have not been conclusively identified.

CONDITION

Very good overall condition, with attractive signs of age and use.

The colours and painted decoration remain particularly attractive and vibrant. There are some minor traces of age and previous use, mainly visible on the underside, which are consistent with the age and history of the pieces.
