Pair of Fon wooden sculptures from Comé, Benin, authentic original works carved from wood, with a blue painted surface and each piece standing about 113 cm high; weight 2.8 kg incl. stand, sold with stand, in fair condition.
Description from the seller
Fon Sculpture Pair - Comé Region, Benin
The pair consists of two exceptionally slender, rod-shaped wooden sculptures whose bodies are almost entirely vertical. Several superimposed heads articulate the elongated forms; protruding eyes, angular noses, large ears, and open mouths lend them an intense alertness. Ring-shaped constrictions interrupt the otherwise smooth body segments. The intense ultramarine blue paint is particularly striking, revealing the dark wood beneath in places. Abrasion, cracks, and irregular pigment deposits create a vibrant, weathered surface.
Originating from Comé in southern Benin, these sculptures belong to a cultural sphere where Fon, Adja, and Ewe traditions are closely intertwined. Anthropomorphic power figures, often called bocio, play an important role in Vodun practice. They can act as material conduits for spiritual forces and, in particular, support protection, healing, or the warding off of harmful influences. Multiple faces or heads can symbolize an enhanced capacity for seeing and perceiving. However, without documented ritual context, it cannot be definitively determined whether the pair in question was actually activated as bocio.
Literature (selection):
Suzanne Preston Blier: African Vodun: Art, Psychology, and Power. Chicago 1995.
Robert Farris Thompson: Flash of the Spirit. New York 1983.
Melville J. Herskovits: Dahomey: An Ancient West African Kingdom. New York 1938.
Some of the information is generated by artificial intelligence and is based on published sources from the fields of ethnography, archaeology, and art history.
