この品はエンコルピオン、胸部の遺物箱の一種で、中世ビザンツ期、特に11世紀から13世紀頃に非常に人気がありました。中央の像は受恵の態度で聖母マリアを描いており、祈りの姿勢で腕を挙げています。この姿勢は人間と神性との仲介者としての彼女の役割を象徴しています。像の頭部を円形に囲む浮彫は、彼女の聖性と神性を示しています。その物の輪郭自体が聖なる護符とみなされ、悪を退け、着用者を物理的に守ると信じられてきました。
