Antique 聖水盤 - 1800-1850 - 聖水盤

Remarkable bénitier with a mural religious medallion of private devotion dating from the 19th century, after Justin Mathieu (1796-1864) (Napoleon III period). The central part, sheltered under its original convex protective glass, presents a high-relief of exceptional technical virtuosity sculpted in sea foam (or fine limestone). The scene depicts Saint Joseph protecting the Child Jesus. The level of detail is striking; this multi-figure composition is characteristic of the work of Justin Mathieu, a famous French sculptor whose miniature religious works were highly prized by the upper bourgeoisie during the Second Empire. The medallion is enhanced by a substantial solid wood frame richly carved with scrolls and Baroque plant motifs, topped by a cross and a pearl-shell-shaped porcelain font.

In good condition, though note small imperfections in the wooden frame and stucco.
