RUBY RED BULLICANTE FREEFORM GLASS BOWL / ASHTRAY – ITALY – CIRCA 1950s–1960s

A striking mid-century hand-blown art-glass bowl, vide-poche or ashtray, Murano, Italy.

The substantial glass body displays a rich ruby-red to cranberry-pink colour encased within a thick layer of clear glass. Numerous carefully arranged air bubbles are suspended throughout the body, creating the decorative controlled-bubble technique generally known in Venetian glassmaking as bullicante or a 'bolle'.

The bowl has a broad, low profile with thick walls and a sculptural freeform rim. One side has been pulled and folded while hot, producing an expressive asymmetric shape that changes appearance according to the viewing angle. The combination of saturated colour, clear casing, controlled bubbles and organic shaping is characteristic of mid-century decorative art glass.
