ダイヤモンドは炭素の立方晶変種で、自然に存在する固体の鉱物である。ダイヤモンドは通常、八面体形の結晶を形成し、しばしば曲面かつ筋状の面を持つ。観察される他の形状としては、四面体、十二面体、立方体がある。結晶は透明で無色だが、窒素やホウ素などの不純物や結晶格子欠陥によって、緑・黄・茶・オレンジ・青・ピンク・赤・灰色から黒まで色づくことがある。
