オーストラリア産の自然な rough opal（ライトニングリッジ産）で、寸法は約7.00 mm〜22.00 mmです。
写真はドライとウェットのオパールの両方を撮影したものです。もちろんウェットのオパールは明るく色彩豊かで、研磨後に得られる効果を際立たせます。オーストラリアの採掘慣行では、石の潜在能力を示すために粗いオパールをウェット状態で撮影するのが通例です。そのため、落札前には写真を慎重にご評価ください。ご注目ありがとうございますとともに、良い落札を！
オパールは水分含有量が約3〜21%のシリカの水和形です。実際、この水分に対する透過性がオパールを親水性にしています。
オパールは比較的低温で沈着し、ほぼあらゆる岩石の割れ目に生じうるもので、特にリモナイト（酸化鉄水酸塩）、砂岩、流紋岩、泥灰岩、玄武岩と共に見られるのが一般的です。貴石オパールは、内部色の変化のある相互作用を示します。
顕微鏡的なスケールでは、貴石オパールは直径約150〜300 nmのシリカ球が六方密方配置（六方最密充填）または立方最密充填の格子を形成して構成されています。これらの規則正しいシリカ球が、オパールの微細構造を通過する光の干渉と回折を生み出し、内部の色を作り出します。
