Item Description
A charming Showa-era miniature chest of drawers (kobitansu), finished in the traditional Japanese "yakisugi" (shou sugi ban) technique, in which cedar wood is charred to bring out and darken the grain while adding natural durability.

The chest features three drawers, each fitted with dark iron pull handles and decorative iron corner fittings and studs along the case, giving it a solid, well-made presence in miniature.
Inside, each drawer is lined with red fabric, a lovely detail traditionally used in small Japanese chests meant for storing personal treasures such as jewelry, accessories, sewing tools or keepsakes.

This is a delightful, tactile piece of Japanese craft furniture, equally at home as a small jewelry chest, a display piece, or simply admired for its beautifully aged wood surface and ironwork.
It shows the natural wear one would expect of a well-used piece from this era, and remains in beautiful overall condition.

Craft Profile
It is finished using yakisugi (also known as shou sugi ban), a traditional Japanese woodworking technique in which the surface of cedar is charred to darken and enhance the grain while improving the wood's natural resistance to insects and decay.
Originally developed for architectural use, this charring technique has long been valued in Japan for both its practical benefits and its distinctive, richly textured appearance, and it continues to be used today in furniture and decorative crafts such as this miniature chest.
