彩色されたテラコッタの馬
中国、漢代（紀元前206年–紀元後220年）
華麗な中国の彩色テラコッタ像で、立つ馬を表現した葬儀用の像として、漢代の葬送美術を象徴するモチーフの一つです。
その像は首を高く長く伸ばし、胸は力強く、臀部は丸みを帯び、長い四肢を備えた姿で、非常に垂直性と彫刻的存在感を生み出しています。頭部はやや上向きで、鼻口部が刻まれ、小さな耳が直立し、口は半開きで、赤みを帯びた彩色の痕跡がまだうかがえます。
表面には灰色・黒・黄土色・土色の魅力的な組み合わせが残り、彩色の痕跡と表面の沈着物が古代遺物としての性格を際立たせています。
漢代には、馬は権力・名声・機動性・軍事能力の象徴として極めて重要な意味を持つようになりました。こうした表現は、死者を来世で伴うための陪葬品（明器）の一部を成していました。
