Description

An original Imperial Japanese Army Rifle Marksmanship Badge, 2nd Class (第二種小銃射撃徽章), conforming to the Showa 4 (1929) regulation.

This badge was awarded in connection with rifle marksmanship proficiency in the Imperial Japanese Army. The design features a stylised cherry blossom with two crossed rifles, characteristic of Japanese Army marksmanship insignia of the pre-war and wartime period.

The badge is an original period military insignia and is offered in its present, unrestored condition.

The reverse features the original hinged pin fitting and catch. The badge shows signs of age and use, including surface wear, patination and discoloration consistent with its age.

The badge is in original used condition and has not been newly restored.

There are visible signs of age, including scratches, rubbing, oxidation/patina and loss or variation of the original surface finish. The reverse also shows age-related oxidation and wear.

The Japanese Army introduced and revised various proficiency badges for military skills, including marksmanship. Specialist reference material records original 2nd Class Japanese Army marksmanship badges, including examples measuring approximately 36 × 35 mm.

The Showa 4 (1929) regulation is particularly relevant to this type of Army proficiency badge. A Japanese militaria dealer also currently lists a 陸軍小銃第二種徽章, described as a Showa 4 regulation example.
