Offered for auction is a refined antique document or jewelry box (casket) from the late Ottoman period (c. 1890-1920). While British-Indian export art from this period heavily relies on botanical motifs, this box stands out due to its rigorous, abstract symmetry. The design is built from a fine mosaic of diamond-shaped medallions, checkerboard patterns, and parallel chevron borders, showcasing high-quality Eastern craftsmanship.

Materials & Construction / Inlay work:
The geometric diamonds are inlaid with authentic, precious mother-of-pearl. Under raking light, these elements display a beautiful iridescence. The mother-of-pearl is combined with contrasting native hardwoods, set into a dark matrix.

Corpus & Hardware:The box features a robust, handmade wooden corpus with an untreated interior and a recessed lid rim, typical of early luxury caskets. The casket retains its original brass hardware. The back features two inset brass hinges meticulously secured with authentic round rivets, while the front has a charming overlock clasp decorated with a stamped rosette.
