G. Carbone presents Storia Ligure, a two‑volume first edition (1836–1837) in parchment binding, Italian language, published by Emanuelle Carbone e C., covering Ligurian history from origins to 1814.
Description from the seller
CARBONE, Giunio.
Liguryan history compendium from origins to 1814 with copper engravings. Genoa, for Emanuelle Carbone e C.°, 1836-1837.
2 volumes in-8° (mm 155 × 105 in binding).
Pp. 453, [2]; 746.
Engravings are not present; in fact there is only one plate.
Contemporary binding in board covered with decorative paper on the boards (red floral motif on an ochre background), vellum spines with raised nerves, friezes with waves and red leather corner pieces with titles and volume numbers stamped in gold (“G. CARBONE / STORIA LIGURE / VOL. I” and “VOL. II”).
First edition (originally issued in fascicles). A popularizing and educational work that retraces the history of Liguria from the origins of the Ligurian peoples, through Roman times, the medieval period, and the long saga of the Republic of Genoa, up to 1814 (Vienna Congress and annexation to the Kingdom of Sardinia). The text includes accounts of political and military events, notes on colonies and Genoese dominions, a chronological catalog of the Ligurian Doges (perpetual and biennial), chronological indexes, and a reflective conclusion.
Young work by the Genoese writer and popularizer Giunio Carbone (Genova 1805 – Firenze 1881), one of the early nineteenth-century syntheses of regional Ligurian history in a modern and accessible format.
This copy is surely rare to find, though it contains only one plate; it preserves the full text and the period binding.
Of definite interest to collectors of local Genoese and Ligurian history, as well as to the study of regional historiography before unification.
