This work is characteristic of the artist's recognized talent in representing the old quarters of Strasbourg, the city where he lived all his life. Here he depicts with great mastery this historic place: the cobbled alley creates the perspective and depth. The half-timbered façade of the hotel with its tower elevates the composition. The silhouettes of the maid on the left and the delivery person advancing toward the viewer add their human presence to the scene.
The effect of light grazing the pavements and façades up to the bright sky brilliantly lights the architecture and floral ornaments, while subtly contrasting with the shaded areas.
Located in the heart of Strasbourg and a stone's throw from the cathedral, the Cour du Corbeau is one of the oldest hotels in Europe, but also one of the most beautiful Renaissance architectural ensembles.

Gustave MÜLLER-VALENTIN is a French painter and watercolorist from Alsace. He is particularly recognized for his works depicting regional landscapes, urban scenes, and traditional Alsatian figures.
Biography and Style
Born and died in Strasbourg, he spent most of his life in Alsace.
He notably exhibited his works in Paris in 1935 at the prestigious Salon des artistes français.
His work is strongly influenced by the neoclassical style and the Barbizon school, deftly playing with color contrasts, light and depth.
His paintings often illustrate the typical streets of Strasbourg, its canals, and its famous cathedral.
He created several portraits and representations of women in traditional costume, notably his famous gouaches or watercolors of Alsatians.
Some of his works are today part of the public collections of the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain de Strasbourg (MAMCS).
