A wooden sculpture titled A wooden sculpture from the Losso people of the Siou region in northern Togo, 46 cm high, about 3 kg, with original authenticity and no stand, Inv. MAZ28005.
Description from the seller
Losso Sculpture - Siou, Niamtougou Region, Togo
The compact wooden figure is characterized by a powerful, almost architectural unity. Two short, sturdy legs connect a round base to the massive, barrel-shaped torso. Above sits a large, laterally flattened head, its face reduced to narrow notches for the eyes and mouth. Linear carvings articulate the cheeks and body; a striking zigzag motif traverses the front. A cord with small pendants is attached to the neck. The gray-brown, dry surface, with its wear, cracks, and darker deposits, lends the figure a pronounced material presence.
The sculpture is attributed to the Losso (Nawdba) people of the Siou and Niamtougou region in northern Togo. Their figures belong to a regional pictorial tradition closely linked to that of the neighboring Lamba people; a clear ethnic distinction based solely on stylistic criteria is often not possible. Different functions are attributed to comparable sculptures: As alua, they could be understood as material "dwellings" of spiritual beings or ancestors; other figures were associated with protection or twin concepts. However, ethnographic documentation remains limited.
Literature (selection)
Pierre Amrouche: Corps & Décors. Statuaire Lamba et Losso du Togo. Paris 2008.
Thomas Keller: Northern Togo Statuary. Lully 2018.

Some of the information and photos are generated by artificial intelligence and is based on published sources from the fields of ethnography, archaeology, and art history documents. Copyright reserverd for all info and photos.
