エメラドは、珪酸塩鉱物ベリリウムの変種である暗緑色から明緑色までの幅を持つ色を有する。エメラドの色は、Cr3+（クロム）およびV3+（バナジウムイオン）の微量な不純物により、濃い青緑色から淡い黄緑色までの範囲で生じる。
純粋なベリリウム鉱物と同様に、エメラドも六方晶系で結晶化し、表面にはガラス様の光沢を有する、六角形の柱状〜柱状の結晶を多く形成する。
モース硬度は7.5〜8で、ベリルと同程度である。
