赤釉（赤楽）の水指として著名な京都の長楽小川第2窯の印象的な作品。柔らかく不規則なラインを特徴とする楽焼の手成形で、表面は深く光沢のあるオレンジ-赤色の釉を施し、炎が窯を不均一に通過した箇所で炭灰色や薄い斑点に崩れる――茶道の実践者に高く評価される劇的な“窯変”の効果を見せています。蓋は渦巻き状の持ち手を施した仕上がりで、体の有機的なリズムを受け継いでいます。元の木箱「友箱」収納箱と包布とともに付属します。
【作家プロフィール】
長楽 小川二代（Choraku Ogawa II）（1912–1991）は、長楽窯の創始者の長子として京都で生まれました。1939年に二代目・長楽と名を継ぎ、1940年には建仁寺系の五代法主から「芸名」慶雲（Keiun）を授かりました。伝統的陶磁技法の保存者として1943年に指定され、独自の新しい楽焼釉法を完成させました。代表的な白楽釉（白楽）や焼煎七彩釉など、1955年には技術的な飛躍を果たしています。楽の伝統の中に留まりつつもその境界を押し広げ、長楽IIは京都の茶道の各流派から深い信頼を勝ち取り、20世紀の究極の楽焼窯師の一人として語り継がれています。
