AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

[SPON, Jacob]
Curious antiquarian research, contained in several dissertations, on medals, bas-reliefs, statues, mosaics, & ancient inscriptions; enriched with a large number of cameo-style figures. By Monsieur Spon, Doctor Agrégé at the College of Physicians of Lyon, & at the Ricourrati Academy of Padua.

In Lyon, At Thomas Amaulry, rue Merciere, at the Mercure Galant. M. DC. LXXXIII [1683]. With the King’s Privilege.

A quarto volume with armorial cover, rebound in antique brown morocco, the spine with raised bands ornamented by gilded compartments and repeated floral motifs, provided with a red titled label. The covers feature in their center a fine gilded armorial vignette. The copy shows signs of use, notably scuffing and bumped corners. The work is illustrated with a frontispiece engraved allegorical, a title page in black and red framed by an engraved vignette, as well as numerous text- and plate-engraved engravings depicting bas-reliefs, Greek and Latin inscriptions (notably on the Syrian deities), coins and ancient monuments such as the famous Gaetian vase (Nineteenth Dissertation).

Good copy of this rare work despite the cited defects.
