Original Aizu-nuri black lacquer square vase with gold bamboo maki-e from Japan, 27 cm high and 8.7 cm square, made of wood, dating to 1900–2000, in good condition with a removable liner for ikebana.
Description from the seller
Item Description
This is a striking Aizu-nuri (Aizu lacquerware) square vase from Fukushima, Japan, finished in deep black lacquer and decorated with a beautiful maki-e design of bamboo. Fine gold and bronze-toned lacquer powder has been meticulously sprinkled to render clusters of bamboo leaves cascading down the body, with slender bamboo stalks rendered in warm ochre and olive tones below. A small red seal reading "凛" (Rin) is placed near the base, marking the piece.
The vase has a tall, slender square (kaku-gata) silhouette, and the mouth holds a removable round liner (otoshi) in a warm copper/bronze lacquer finish, designed to hold water for fresh flower arrangements — a traditional feature of Japanese ikebana vases.
Aizu-nuri is one of Japan's most celebrated lacquerware traditions, dating back over 400 years to the Aizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, renowned for its durable lacquer base and elegant maki-e decoration technique, in which lacquer designs are sprinkled with fine metallic powders while still tacky.
This piece would make an elegant addition to a traditional Japanese-style interior, tokonoma alcove, or as a striking display vase for ikebana flower arranging.
Size
Height: 27 cm
Width: 8.7 cm
Depth: 8.7 cm
