Skin は、Pieter Bas Bouwman がケニア南部での3か月間の滞在中に、人と動物の対立をマサイ族コミュニティとともに記録したプロジェクトの中で生まれた。後にオランダの Haute Photographie で展示された。

Skin は、人類、自然、そして私たちが手を加える風景との、脆い関係を探る。
作品には、象の群れが割れた風化した表面と一体化しているかのように見える。彼らの肌の質感は周囲の風景とほとんど判別がつかなくなる。
動物と大地は、同じ肌を共有しているかのように見え、時の流れ・脆弱さ・外部の力にさらされている。

作品は、人間の自然界への影響を、介入を文字通り描くことなく反映している。代わりに Bouwman は、境界が溶け始める画像を作り出す。動物と風景、人物と表面、保存と消失の間で。

抑制的な白黒のパレットと層状の構図は、画像にほとんどアーカイブ的な質感を与え、ひび割れた表面は象をその環境と物理的にも視覚的にも結びつける。

About the artist
Pieter Bas Bouwman (b. 1990) is an American-born artist based in the Netherlands. He graduated from the Fotoacademie Amsterdam and the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. His practice moves between photography and autonomous art, often examining humanity’s relationship with nature and the traces human intervention leaves behind.
