Mysia, Lampsakos; Diobol in silver (AR), ca. 500–490 BC, 11.89 mm, 1.15 g, obverse Janiform female head with double taenia and a single earring, reverse head of Athena left in a crestless Corinthian helmet within an incuse square.

Ca. 500-490 BC.
Diobol (Silver, 11.89 mm, 1.15 g).
Obv: Janiform female head, wearing double taenia and a single earring.
Rev: Head of Athena to left, wearing crestless Corinthian helmet; all within incuse square.
Reference: SNG Copenhagen 184. SNG von Aulock 1290.
Lampsakos stood on the Asian shore of the Hellespont, along the sea route linking the Aegean with the Black Sea. Renowned for its wine, the city combined agricultural wealth with a strategic maritime position. Around 500 BC it lay under Persian rule, but joined the Ionian Revolt before being recaptured by the Persian general Daurises in 498/497 BC. Its early coinage belongs to this turbulent period of Greek resistance and imperial reconquest.
