Two Meiji period Japanese Kutani miniature vases in ceramic, glazed in deep vermilion with gilt detailing and hand-painted peony and cherry blossom motifs, each 9 cm high and 2.5 cm wide at the base, together weighing about 100 g, in good antique condition with minor age-related marks and a small firing crack on one neck.
Description from the seller
The Design
Each vase is of classic globular bottle form with a tall cylindrical neck glazed in a deep vermillion red.
The spherical body is decorated all around with lush peony blooms, cherry blossom sprays and flowing botanical foliage, painted in rich iron-red with fine gilt detailing throughout.
The peony — a symbol of prosperity, beauty and good fortune in Japanese culture — is rendered with confident, fluid brushwork that speaks to genuine craft skill.
Each vase carries slightly different decorative panels, making the pair complementary rather than identical — a hallmark of hand-painted antique production.
The bases are unglazed and unmarked, consistent with Meiji period export Kutani ware.
