CK Carbonaceous Chondrite Meteorite (Oriented) from the Sahara, Sáhara, weight 175.5 g.
Description from the seller
Ordinary carbonaceous chondrites are much less common than their ordinary sisters, and carbonaceous chondrites account for 5% of meteorites that reach Earth. They are characterized by the presence of carbon in their composition—hence their name—usually in the form of organic compounds such as amino acids. In addition, carbonaceous chondrites often contain water or minerals that indicate they have been altered by their presence. Dark and usually abundant matrix, they are the oldest meteorites known and therefore the oldest material you could ever hold in your hands.
CK meteorites are carbonaceous chondrites with a gray to dark gray matrix, sometimes slightly greenish, with abundant chondrules ranging from type 3 to 6, with an average diameter of 1 mm, that is, somewhat smaller than CVs and larger than COs (a family of carbonaceous meteorites with which they are related). They sometimes contain sizable CAIs. Additionally, some CK members show shock veins that indicate a violent history for their parent body or a history of impact.
The specimen of this lot has a beautiful oriented shape that speaks to how the meteorite traversed the atmosphere. It has an excellent size, and fusion crust on a large part of its exterior, partially transformed into desert patina, something hard to find in this type of carbonaceous chondrites. Ideal for a large collection or museum.
All of our meteorites come with a certificate from IMCA (International Meteorite Collectors Association), guaranteeing the authenticity of all our meteorites for life. Buy with guarantees.
Best regards and our best wishes.
