Description from the seller
Ancient Roman Silvered & Gilded Bronze Ring with Eagle Intaglio
Roman Empire, c. 1st–3rd century AD
A striking and unusually large Ancient Roman bronze ring, originally silvered and gilded, featuring a finely
engraved intaglio depicting an eagle descending into its nest — a powerful and highly symbolic image in Roman culture.
The ring is robustly cast with a substantial oval bezel. Although the original silver gilding has largely worn away over centuries, it remains clearly visible in select recessed areas, particularly around the engraved motif, creating a beautiful contrast between the dark patinated bronze and the surviving silvery highlights. This natural wear gives the piece a unique, unrepeatable character, making it a true one-off artefact.
The engraved eagle — emblematic of Jupiter, imperial authority, victory, and the Roman legions — was a potent symbol often associated with military command and elite status. Rings bearing such iconography were commonly used as personal signets, and it is entirely plausible that this ring once belonged to a Roman officer or military commander, serving both as a marker of rank and as a seal of authority.
The engraving is executed in intaglio, intended for use as a seal, and displays confident line work despite its age. The overall form and iconography are consistent with Roman rings of the High Imperial period.
Details:
Material: Bronze with original silvering and gilding (partially preserved)
Inner diameter: approx. 22 mm
Condition: Structurally excellent; surface wear consistent with age; silver gilding largely worn but visibly
preserved in places
Decoration: Intaglio engraving of an eagle landing in a nest
Culture: Ancient Roman
Date: circa 1st–3rd century AD
A rare and evocative Roman ring combining imperial symbolism, military association, and surviving precious-metal surface treatment. An exceptional addition to any collection of Roman jewellery, military antiquities, or ancient signet rings.
