Description from the seller

Late Roman / Early Byzantine Silver Repousse Applique Depicting the Virgin Mary with Christ Child
Early Christian / Early Byzantine Period, circa 5th–7th Century AD

Material: Silver
Weight: 0.5 g
Dimensions: 34.2 × 18.5 × 7.2 mm

From a Private European Collection.

A fascinating and very rare Late Roman to Early Byzantine silver repousse applique fragment depicting the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child, belonging to the formative centuries of Early Christian and Byzantine art.

Despite its remarkably light weight of only 0.5 g, the surviving fragment preserves a highly evocative figural composition. The upper part is dominated by the large frontal face of the Virgin Mary, with prominently rendered eyes, nose and mouth. Her elongated body is defined by numerous vertical lines, creating the impression of a long, heavily folded garment.

At the centre of the composition appears the smaller figure of the Christ Child, positioned directly against the body of the Virgin. The deliberate difference in scale between the dominant maternal figure and the smaller child creates an immediately recognizable Mother and Child composition.

The strongly frontal and hieratic character of the representation is particularly characteristic of the profound artistic transformation that took place during Late Antiquity and the Early Byzantine period. Classical Roman naturalism increasingly developed into a more symbolic visual language in which frontality, symmetry and spiritual presence became central elements of Christian imagery.

The object was fashioned from an exceptionally thin sheet of silver using the repoussé technique, in which the metal was worked to create the raised figural decoration. This sophisticated technique allowed ancient craftsmen to produce expressive relief decoration from remarkably small quantities of precious metal.

Its irregular and partially folded edges demonstrate that the present piece survives as a fragment of a larger precious-metal object. Such figural silver appliqués could originally have formed part of religious or prestigious objects, including reliquaries, caskets, liturgical furnishings or other decorated objects associated with the Early Christian world.

The surface has developed a beautiful dark grey to almost black ancient patina, while exposed areas along the edges reveal the contrasting silvery appearance of the underlying metal.

Of particular importance is the subject itself. The image of the Virgin Mary and Christ Child became one of the defining subjects of Byzantine Christianity, and representations of the Theotokos – the Mother of God – occupied an increasingly prominent position in Christian visual culture during Late Antiquity and the Early Byzantine period.

The combination of precious metal, miniature repoussé workmanship and Early Christian iconography gives this tiny surviving fragment an extraordinary historical presence. Although only a fragment of its original object survives, the central sacred image remains recognizable.

A very rare and evocative piece of Early Christian silverwork, preserving one of the most important images of Byzantine religious art: the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child.
