Description from the seller

SAMURAI ARMOUR WITH GOLD DRAGON ROUNDEL AND ANTLER CREST
Tetsu kuro-urushi-nuri okegawa munatori maru-ryū maki-e nimai-dō gusoku
Japan · Mid-Edo period (18th century) · NKBKHK Tokubetsu Kichō Shiryō certificate no. 2360
The helmet. The kabuto is a ribbed suji-bachi of russet iron, its plates joined by raised flanges and crowned by a gilt chrysanthemum-shaped tehen kanamono. From an engraved kuwagata-dai worked with scrolling foliage rises a pair of branching deer antlers, patinated to a warm bronze brown. The peak carries a pointed central fitting. The broad fukigaeshi are covered in printed leather with gilt rims and round gilt bosses, and edged with orange and white cross-knots (hishinui). The shikoro is made of lacquered plates laced in dark indigo sugake odoshi, finished with two rows of hishinui along the lower edge. At the back, a vermilion agemaki bow with full tassels hangs from its ring.
The mask. The menpō is lacquered a deep, glossy brown-black, with a detachable nose, a bristle moustache and an open mouth. Its throat guard (yodare-kake) repeats the orange and white hishinui. A thick twisted orange cord ties the helmet beneath the chin.
The cuirass. The dō is a two-piece okegawa cuirass of horizontal iron plates under black lacquer. Across the abdomen, a large gold maki-e roundel shows a dragon coiled among clouds (maru-ryū). Its scales, whiskers, claws and staring eyes are drawn in fine incised lines over the gold. Above it, the chest is laced in close kebiki odoshi in bands of white, plum and indigo, the munatori that gives the armour its name. Two gilt chrysanthemum ring fittings sit on the chest, and the upper plate is edged with a gilt rim (fukurin).
Shoulders and skirt. The sode and the kusazuri are made of black-lacquered plates laced in indigo sugake odoshi, each closed by a double row of orange and patterned hishinui. The kusazuri hang from long indigo suspension cords.
Arms, thighs and legs. The kote have solid lacquered forearm plates and lacquered tekkō, joined by chain mail over a printed textile with hemp-leaf pattern (asanoha). The haidate are set with square, pyramid-faceted lacquered plates linked by chain mail, mounted on patterned cloth and trimmed with buff leather. The shino-suneate are made of lacquered splints joined by chain mail over silk brocade, with black leather knee guards.
Certificate. The armour is accompanied by a ninteisho from the Nihon Katchū Bugu Kenkyū Hozonkai (NKBKHK, the Japanese Armour Society), dated 14 September 2025, no. 2360. It designates the armour Tokubetsu Kichō Shiryō (Especially Precious Material) and dates it to the mid-Edo period.
Condition. The lacquer keeps a deep lustre and the gold of the dragon remains bright. The lacing, the textiles and the leather show gentle, honest wear, and there are small losses to the lacquer at the plate edges. Excellent for its age, with only minor wear consistent with its antiquity. The armour comes with its storage box (yoroi-bitsu).
An authentic samurai armor that will be the central focus of any room where it is placed and that will delight any fan of Japanese art. A great stylish piece that will impress anywhere. As is normal in a suit of armor with so much history, which was undoubtedly used for combat and is not a mere reproduction of the 20th century, it has some superficial scratches, surface damage and chips that show that it had a long life of combat and retains an authentic and precious historical value worthy of a museum. This exclusive piece is making it an incredible opportunity for any collector of Japanese, war or simply historical art to get their hands on a piece that will attract attention wherever it is displayed, from offices, to private homes, offices or restaurants and will give a regal look to any place. The armour has gilded details that show the quality of the piece. The incredible workmanship accentuates such ornate pieces as the kabuto, the mempo and the Do. The stand to assemble it and the box are included. This armour is sure to delight any collector of Asian art and will be the focal point of any visitor's home, shop or office. There is a very ancient object and there are damaged by time and tears. Due to the delicacy of continuous assembly and disassembly, returns are not allowed on old armor.
