Description from the seller
Item Description
A *han-shidō* (mottled purple copper) vase by the Hara Sōuemon workshop (the hereditary art name is Seiun). The piece is associated with Hara Sōuemon (born 1936). The form is an elongated ovoid shape divided into two sections — upper and lower — joined by a raised horizontal band running around the middle. On the front, a vertical row of small circular and half-moon relief decorations is arranged. The surface displays the mottled red, purple, and olive-green patination characteristic of *han-shidō*. The base bears an engraved "Seiun" seal, and the body carries a dedicatory inscription, both of which can be confirmed in the photographs.
Artist Profile
Hara Sōuemon is the name of a long-established casting workshop based in Kashiwazaki City, Niigata Prefecture, known for its *han-shidō* works produced using the lost-wax (*rōgata*) casting technique. The workshop's origins date to the Edo period; it descends from a line of metalcasters who worked under the patronage of the Uesugi clan, with a lineage spanning approximately 650 years. "Seiun" is the hereditary art name passed down through each generation. The fourth-generation Seiun was born in Ōkubo in 1936 and learned lost-wax casting from his father. From 1967 onward he was accepted into the Nitten exhibition, and was designated a holder of an Intangible Cultural Property of Niigata Prefecture for his lost-wax casting technique. In 1995 he formally succeeded to the name Hara Sōuemon. The *han-shidō* patterning produced by the workshop is achieved by firing cast bronze with high-quality charcoal, which fixes an oxide film onto the surface.
