Description from the seller

ヴィンテージ・マリ・バンバラの部族マスク。木製のアフリカン・マスク。

primitive history is provided by oral traditions, which claim that the Dogon originate from the western edge of the Niger River (10th to 13th centuries). They migrated westward, to the northern part of Burkina Faso, where local stories describe them as kibsi. Around 1490, they fled from a region now known as the Kingdom of Yatenga, in northern Mossi, when it was invaded by a Mossi calvary. They ended up in the Bandia-gara cliffs region, safe from advancing horsemen. The carbon-14 dating techniques used on human remains excavated found in the cliffs suggest the presence of inhabitants in the region before the arrival of the Dogon, dating back to the 10th century. The Dogon who did not flee were incorporated into Mossi society and became known as nyonyose, or descendants of the first inhabitants.
