A iron sculpture by the Mumuye from the Takum region in Nigeria; a black iron figure, 49 cm tall and weighing 570 g, in fair condition and sold without a stand.

黒鉄のムムゥメ族彫像、タクム地域、ナイジェリア
表面は灰茶色と錆橙色のトーンを伴い、不規則性と酸化の痕跡を示す。台座付き。
この黒いムムゥメ族の鉄の物体は非常に細長い人間形で、狭くほぼ真っすぐな軸を中心にしている。その上端は小さく平たい頭部を形成し、尖った先端があり、丸い目、鼻孔を表す点が二つ、横長の口が組み合わさった stylized face(文様化された顔)を作っている。側面の二本の枝が腕のように下向きに曲がり、広がった手で終わる。指は切り込みで示されている。ダイヤモンド、切り込み模様、交差する線が軸の主要面を横断し、裏面は比較的控えめである。底部には巻き上げられた金属バンドが束ねられた茎の束を越え、先端が渦巻き状に開く。黒い展示台に置かれている。表面には灰茶色と錆びた黄土色の色調、 irregularities(不規則性)と酸化の痕跡が見られるが、これだけでは時代を特定できない。形を数個の本質的な要素へと還元することで、この像は自然主義的ではなく象徴的な性格を帯びる。民族学的文脈では、ムムゥメ族の鉄棒は雨をもたらす儀式に用いられると記録されている。
ムムゥメ族はナイジェリア北部のベヌ川の東岸に沿って居住しており、多様な影響を受けた地域である。伝統的にムムゥメは figurative sculptures(具象の彫刻)をさまざまな目的で使用する。これらの高度に抽象化された像は「ラガラガン」と呼ばれ、信頼できる長老に託され、敷地内の Shrine(神殿)で保管される。自然の力を操作し人間の行動を制御する力があると信じられている。ムムゥメの置物は、雨をもたらす儀式、鉄の錬成、癒し、助言、裁判の執行、葬儀への参加などの儀式で使用される。ムムゥメの像は西アフリカで最も作形が抽象的な部類に入る。これらの卓越した彫像は、アフリカ美術の抽象と造形的発展の最良の典型例である。
