オパールは、水分含有量が3％から21％の水和形二酸化ケイ素です。実際、この水への透過性こそがオパールを親水性にしています。
オパールは比較的低温で生成し、隙間はほとんどの岩石の割れ目に生じ得ますが、最も一般的にはリモナイト、砂岩、リオライト、泥灰岩、玄武岩などとともに見られます。宝石質オパールは内部色の変動的な相互作用を示します。
微視的なスケールでは、宝石質オパールは直径約150〜300 nmのシリカ球からなり、それらは六方晶または立方最密充填の格子を作ります。これらの整列したシリカ球が、オパールの微細構造を透過する光の干渉・回折を引き起こすことで内部色を生み出します。
