Description from the seller

Item Description
This is a tall, finely woven Japanese bamboo flower basket (hana-kago), traditionally used in tea ceremony and ikebana flower arrangement settings.

***Please note: photo 2 (the tea celemony room interior) in our photo set are AI-generated reference images created for atmosphere only, not photographs of the actual item.

The tapering, rounded body is woven in a two-tone diagonal lattice pattern using split bamboo strips, alternating between darkened and natural-toned bamboo to create a rich, textured surface.

The basket stands on four short bamboo feet and has a flat, woven base reinforced with a bamboo cross-strut for stability.

A tall, graceful arched bamboo handle rises from the rim, secured on each side with intricately knotted bamboo cord lashings — a hallmark of traditional Japanese basketry craftsmanship.

Dating from the 1980s, this basket carries the warm, aged patina typical of well-used bamboo work, and would make a striking display piece on its own or filled with an arrangement (using a separate water container/liner, called an "otoshi," as is traditional — not included).

Size
Height: 39 cm
Width: 27 cm
Depth: 21 cm

Weight 235 g

Condition
This basket is in generally good condition for its age, with an attractive, well-aged patina from use.
One of the cord lashings has come undone at a single point on the body — please refer to the photos for reference.
No "otoshi" (inner water container/liner) is included.

Craft Profile
Bamboo flower baskets (hana-kago) such as this one have long been produced across Japan for use in tea ceremony (sadō) and ikebana flower arrangement, prized for the skill of their weaving and the elegant lines of their handles.
The fine two-tone lattice weave and carefully lashed handle on this basket reflect the traditional techniques associated with this craft.
