Jeffrey Silverthorne はハワイで1946年に生まれた。彼はプロヴィデンス（USA）で生活し、教え、写真を撮っている。初期の写真は1960年代の終わりにさかのぼる。それ以来写真を撮り続け、大規模なシリーズを軸に作品を構築してきた（『One ring circus』『Lettres from the dead house』『Missing』『Boystown』）。Diane Arbus に影響を受け、1970年代の写真運動に推移を受けつつも、Jeffrey Silverthorne はあらゆる時代や潮流から独立している。『Direction For Living』（Fotografisk Center, 2007）、『Boystown』、『The Perfume of Desire』（Lars Schwande, 2009）、そして Travel Plans（les éditions de l’œil / Noorderlicht）を経て、『Portraits & Figures』は彼のポートレート作家としての仕事に焦点を当てている。
