Description from the seller
Ancient Roman Bronze Applique Depicting the Winged God Mercury (Hermes)
Roman Imperial Period, circa 1st–3rd Century AD
Material: Bronze
Weight: 36.3 g
Dimensions: 45.6 × 33.9 × 18.0 mm
From a Private European Collection.
A fascinating and highly unusual Ancient Roman bronze applique featuring an expressive winged mythological head, attributed to Mercury (Hermes), one of the most important and widely revered deities of the Greco-Roman world.
The finely modelled face is framed by elaborate, sweeping feather-like ornaments, while two prominent wing-shaped projections rise above the forehead. These distinctive features evoke the celebrated winged attributes of Mercury, the divine messenger of the gods.
The youthful facial features, carefully defined eyes, prominent nose and remarkably pronounced open mouth create an exceptionally expressive composition. The decorative feather-like elements extend symmetrically along both sides of the face, giving the object an impressive sculptural appearance despite its relatively small dimensions.
Particularly attractive is the surviving ancient surface, displaying warm earthy deposits combined with appealing greenish-blue patination, beautifully accentuating the raised details and contours of the bronze.
Mercury – Messenger of the Gods, Protector of Travellers and Commerce:
Known to the Greeks as Hermes, Mercury occupied an exceptionally important position in Roman religion and everyday life.
As the divine messenger of Jupiter, he travelled between the worlds of gods and mortals. His distinctive wings symbolised extraordinary speed, freedom of movement and his ability to cross boundaries between different realms.
Mercury was also revered as the protector of merchants, travellers, trade and prosperity. His worship was particularly significant throughout the Roman Empire, where commerce and communication connected distant provinces with the great cities of the Mediterranean.
The winged attributes of Mercury became among the most recognisable symbols in classical art, appearing on Roman coins, sculptures, decorative bronzes and personal objects.
An Exceptional Example of Roman Decorative Art:
The applique demonstrates the Roman appreciation for elaborate mythological decoration and expressive bronze craftsmanship.
Its sculptural design, projecting facial features and distinctive feathered ornamentation suggest that it originally formed part of a larger decorative composition, potentially attached to a vessel, furnishing or another prestigious object.
The central opening through the mouth and the additional smaller perforation are particularly interesting constructional features, offering valuable clues to its original mounting and function.
Bronze appliques featuring mythological subjects were employed throughout the Roman world, combining artistic sophistication with religious symbolism and the cultural prestige of classical mythology.
The representation of Mercury would have been especially meaningful in a society where travel, commercial success and divine protection played important roles in everyday life.
A highly appealing and unusual Roman bronze, combining striking mythological imagery, expressive craftsmanship and the enduring symbolism of Mercury, the winged messenger of the gods.
An attractive collector's piece for enthusiasts of Roman mythology, ancient bronzes and classical decorative arts.
