Origin: Japan – Aizu, Fukushima Prefecture

Condition:

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the condition description.

───────

This richly decorated Japanese Aizu lacquerware calligraphy box features a distinctive double-lid construction, with two separately decorated lids and a compartmented interior.

The outer lid displays three baskets filled with seasonal flowers, including large peonies and chrysanthemums, accompanied by delicate foliage, arching grasses and scattered maple leaves. Flowing red cords weave between the arrangements, bringing a sense of movement to the composition.

Fine gold-coloured outlines define the petals, leaves and woven basket details. Vivid red, white, green and yellow accents stand out against the dark lacquer ground, while a finely dotted asanoha (hemp-leaf) geometric pattern adds depth and detail to the background.

Lifting the outer lid reveals a second, removable lid decorated with stylised flowers and scrolling foliage in gold tones, accented with red and blue against a densely patterned ground. Its intricate ornamental design contrasts beautifully with the floral baskets on the outer lid, creating a visual surprise as the box is opened.

The second lid can be lifted out to access the storage space beneath. Together with the internal dividers, this layered construction provides an attractive and practical arrangement for storing calligraphy accessories and other small treasured objects.

With decoration extending across both lids, this piece offers several surfaces to admire and makes an appealing addition to a collection of Japanese lacquerware.
