Description from the seller

鉄褐色の花文を描く珍しい Sawankhalok 釉薬覆い箱
Ayutthaya 期, 16世紀, タイ
高さ 5.6 cm / 口径 6.7 cm
Si Satchanalai, Sukhothai 県

finely potted Sawankhalok ware stoneware covered box, dating to the Ayutthaya period, 16th century, and produced in the historic kiln region of Si Satchanalai, Sukhothai Province, Thailand.

The vessel is of compact rounded form, raised on a short circular foot and fitted with a gently domed cover surmounted by a small knop.

The decoration is freely painted in iron-brown pigment beneath a translucent glaze. The upper surface of the cover is arranged with a radiating floral or petal-like design surrounding the central knop, enclosed within concentric bands. The sloping sides of the cover are decorated with a rhythmic series of vertical brushstrokes.

The body is similarly painted with loosely rendered floral and scrolling motifs, framed above and below by horizontal lines. The spontaneous brushwork and restrained decorative vocabulary are characteristic of Sawankhalok ceramics of the period.

The vessel is covered with a soft pale bluish-grey to greenish translucent glaze, displaying extensive fine natural craquelure. The glaze pools subtly in recessed areas and varies in tone across the surface, while the iron pigment ranges from soft grey-brown to deeper brown-black.
The underside of the cover and the interior of the box are largely unglazed, revealing the pale stoneware body and natural traces of the firing process. The foot ring is likewise unglazed, with visible kiln marks and surface deposits.

Sawankhalok ceramics were among the most important ceramic products of medieval Thailand and were widely traded throughout Southeast Asia. Covered boxes of this type were produced in a variety of painted and celadon-glazed forms and were valued both as functional containers and as export wares.
This example is particularly appealing for its compact proportions, lively iron-painted decoration, softly crackled glaze and well-preserved surface character.

Condition:
Overall in good antique condition, consistent with age. The surface shows natural glaze wear, fine craquelure, minor abrasions, iron spotting and kiln-related imperfections. Small areas of glaze thinning and minor edge wear are visible, together with firing marks and natural deposits to the unglazed areas.

No obvious restoration is apparent from visual inspection. Please carefully examine all photographs, as they form an integral part of the condition report.

Shipping worldwide by EMS, usually 7-14 days to deliver.
