Japanese Vintage Ceramic Vase – Green Glaze – Showa Era – Dated 1960 Wooden Box – Mid-Century Japanese Art

A beautiful vintage Japanese ceramic vase featuring a distinctive deep green glaze, elegant vertical relief patterns, and striking orange decorative accents.

This vase comes with its original wooden presentation box, which bears an inscription dated November 23, 1960 (Showa 35).

The box also contains historical inscriptions identifying the Aichi Prefecture Machinery and Tools Commercial Cooperative Association and commemorating long service.

These details provide an interesting connection to Japanese business culture and commemorative gift-giving traditions during the Showa period.

The combination of its elegant ceramic design and documented historical presentation makes this an attractive piece for collectors of Japanese vintage pottery and mid-century decorative art.

DESIGN AND CRAFTSMANSHIP

The vase features a beautiful combination of rich olive-green and dark green glazes, complemented by warm orange decorative lines and circular motifs.

Its tall, slender body has an unusual geometric form, with multiple vertical ridges creating a sculptural appearance.

The glossy glaze emphasizes the raised surfaces and creates subtle variations in color depending on the lighting.

Fine crackle-like patterns can also be observed in parts of the glazed surface.

The orange accents contrast beautifully with the deep green background, giving the vase a distinctive Japanese modernist appearance.

The octagonal-inspired opening and faceted body further enhance its architectural design.

The overall style is particularly attractive to collectors of Japanese mid-century ceramics.

ORIGIN AND POTTERY STYLE

Country of origin: Japan

Period: Showa era

Historical date on wooden box: November 23, 1960

Material: Glazed ceramic

Pottery style: The design and glaze are reminiscent of Japanese Banko ware, traditionally associated with Mie Prefecture.

However, the exact kiln, production region, and maker have not been independently verified.

The wooden box bears a handwritten inscription and a faded red seal, but the artist's name cannot be identified with certainty.

ORIGINAL WOODEN BOX AND HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The original wooden presentation box is an especially interesting feature of this item.

The reverse side of the box includes the following Japanese inscriptions:

"永年勤続賞" – Long Service Award

"昭和三十五年十一月二十三日" – November 23, 1960

"愛知県機械工具商業協同組合" – Aichi Prefecture Machinery and Tools Commercial Cooperative Association

These inscriptions indicate that the vase was presented or intended as a commemorative gift in connection with a long-service award.

The box also retains a vintage label from Goto Copperware Store (後藤銅器店), a retailer in Nagoya, Aichi Prefecture, Japan.

The label refers to traditional Japanese crafts and metalwork.

Although the retailer's name refers to copperware, the vase itself is made of ceramic.

The original wooden box adds historical interest and enhances the appeal of the piece as a collectible Japanese vintage object.
