DESCRIPTION:

Two rooted canine teeth from Pappocetus lugardi or Zygorhiza kochii, a type of protocetid cetacean (early whale ancestor). These outstanding teeth come from the Middle Eocene-age Aridal and Samlat Formations, located in the Western Sahara near Gueran, Morocco. They’re commonly found associated with teeth of the shark Otodus sokolovi (Carcharocles auriculatus), a Megalodon ancestor.

Observations about Restorations/Repairs/Comments: They have few glued and filled fractures. Mainly on the basal part of the root.

Despite these restorations, they are truly magnificent enormous specimens.

Pappocetus lugardi is an extinct species of protocetid whale that lived during the Eocene epoch (approximately 40–44 million years ago) in Africa. As a transitional form between land and sea, this amphibious, 20–25 foot long carnivore is considered an ancestor of Basilosaurus and represents a crucial stage in whale evolution.

Key Facts About Pappocetus lugardi:

Discovery: First described by C.W. Andrews in 1920 based on fossils from the Ameki Formation in Nigeria. Additional specimens have been found in the Sahara Desert in Morocco.

Evolutionary Position: Pappocetus belongs to the family Protocetidae, which are early, amphibious whales that could likely move on land using their large limbs, while also being capable swimmers.

Physical Characteristics:
Size: Estimated to be around 20-25 feet in length.
Diet/Habits: A large, amphibious, aquatic carnivore with robust teeth, likely relying on vision and smell for hunting.

Appearance: More whale-like than its predecessors, with a streamlined body, yet retaining functional, though reduced, hind limbs.

Fossil Record: Known from jaw fragments, teeth, and skull material.

Relation to Modern Whales: While it was a transitional form, it is unlikely to have possessed the modern echolocation abilities found in later cetaceans.

Poblador and I have a strong academic background in Paleontology and Geology from the University of Madrid and University of Alicante. I have participated in fossil excavation projects in several locations mainly in Europe and Africa for over 10 years. Writing scientifically accurate descriptions of every specimen is one of the tasks that consume most of my time. Obviously, recognizing fake and restored fossils is second nature to me. So you can be sure that every fossil in this website has been carefully screened and inspected by me. I have served collectors and fossil enthusiasts over the years. I have also supplied museums and institutions. I combine the study and research of significant specimens with exhibiting and selling the many other finds, which helps fund the new expeditions. Additionally, I have a small team of support staff for logistics. I've personally trained them to handle and pack the fossils properly so that they can be shipped within 24 hours and arrive at your door in one piece. Last but not least, I'm fortunate to have a great network of other seasoned paleontologists with whom I discuss the rarest items, new discoveries, and exploration trips to remote quarries... If I don't know something, the paleontological community really helps out. I like to manage Jurassic Dreams as a well curated online exhibition of museum grade pieces. I'm a collector myself and I love to share the knowledge with other fellow collectors. That's why I will respond to any email when you have any doubt or when you buy, and you'll have a personalized fossil selection experience.
