Description from the seller
Elegant traditional Japanese Noh mask (能面) of Ko-omote (小面), meticulously hand-carved and finished by Noh mask artist Yūji (侑司).
Ko-omote, literally meaning “little face,” represents a beautiful young woman and is one of the most iconic female masks in classical Japanese Noh theatre. Its expression is characterized by refined features, narrow eyes, delicately raised lips and a serene smile. Depending on the angle and lighting, the expression subtly changes, giving the mask the mysterious emotional depth for which Noh masks are celebrated.
This example displays particularly fine carving and careful surface finishing. The softly modeled cheeks and nose, delicate hairline, finely painted eyebrows and eyes, and traditional blackened teeth (お歯黒) create a graceful and highly expressive appearance.
The reverse reveals the characteristic hand-carved texture of the wood and bears the artist's inscription 「侑司作」 (made by Yūji).
The mask is accompanied by its signed original wooden tomobako, also inscribed 「侑司作」, as well as a beautiful traditional brocade mask bag (面袋) decorated with rich floral and auspicious motifs. An explanatory sheet describing the characteristics and role of the Ko-omote mask is also included.
Dimensions: 21 x 13.5 x 7 cm
note: import duties, VAT and other fees collected by the destination countrys should be responsible by the buyer.
Good condition: there are stains and wear off from aging and using, please also take a look at the listed photos for a reference.
Will be well packaged and shipping by Japan Post in fast delivery.
