Enamel advertising sign for Chunichi Shimbun from the Showa era, Japan, 59.5 × 11.5 cm, original/official, made in Japan, in fair condition with possible parts missing.
Description from the seller
Vintage Japanese “Chunichi Shimbun” Newspaper Subscription Enamel Sign Showa Era
A striking vintage Japanese enamel advertising sign for “Chunichi Shimbun” (中日新聞), one of Japan's best-known regional newspapers, with a history deeply connected to the Chubu region of central Japan.
The sign features a beautiful deep navy-blue enamel background, bold white Japanese lettering, and a distinctive red-and-white newspaper emblem at the top.
The name displayed on this sign suggests that it was used after the 1965 name change, although its exact manufacturing date remains unknown.
The words “Subscription Registration Office” indicate that this sign was intended to identify a place where customers could arrange newspaper subscriptions.
Such establishments formed an important part of Japan's local commercial network, connecting newspaper publishers with their communities.
The bold, slightly calligraphic lettering gives the sign a distinctive Japanese character, while the restrained color palette creates an elegant, timeless appearance.
Natural traces of age and minor enamel wear further contribute to its authentic vintage charm.
More than simply an old newspaper advertisement, this sign is a nostalgic reminder of Showa-era Japan, when printed newspapers and neighborhood delivery networks played an essential role in everyday life.
An appealing collectible for enthusiasts of Japanese enamel signs, Showa-era advertising, vintage newspapers, Japanese typography, and traditional commercial history.
[Size]
59.5x11.5cm
[Condition]
Good vintage condition.
Although it shows signs of use, the letters and designs remain clearly visible.
