【Product details】
A finely decorated lacquer box made for storing shikishi, square boards traditionally used for Japanese poetry, haiku, calligraphy and painting. The glossy black lacquer lid depicts a pair of doves beneath an old pine tree in richly detailed gold and warm-toned maki-e.
The evergreen pine is a traditional symbol of longevity, resilience and enduring prosperity. The affectionate pair of doves represents harmony, devotion and peace. Together, these motifs express an auspicious wish for a long, peaceful and harmonious relationship.
The decoration incorporates several advanced lacquer techniques. The pine trunk is enriched with kirikane, in which minute pieces of gold leaf are carefully applied to create shimmering details, while raised taka-maki-e gives the design pronounced depth and texture. Areas of nashiji, formed by sprinkling fine gold or silver flakes into lacquer to produce a pear-skin-like surface, add further brilliance and visual depth. The feathers, feet and facial features of the doves are rendered with exceptionally delicate lines.
Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique in which gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to create intricate designs. The combination of these techniques produces a refined three-dimensional effect that changes subtly according to the light.
The interior is lined with Japanese paper. Three decorative shikishi with gold-flecked and patterned paper designs are included, together with a silk wrapping cloth and cord. The set also comes with a vermilion-lacquered outer storage box inscribed “On-shikishi-ki” (御色紙器), meaning a container for shikishi. There is an inscription on the inside of the outer box lid, but the artist is unknown.
Dating from the Showa period (1926–1989), the shikishi box has minor scuffs, and the interior paper lining has staining. The silk wrapping cloth also has stains. The three shikishi are in very good condition. The outer box has rubbing, scratches, dents and areas of lacquer loss. Good vintage condition overall. Please refer to the photos for details.
