Description from the seller
vintage Japanese advertisement sign
A vintage Japanese enamel advertising sign for “Asahi Jika-Tabi” (アサヒ地下タビ), traditional Japanese split-toe work footwear associated with one of Japan's historic footwear manufacturers.
The sign features a white enamel background, bold navy-blue and red Japanese lettering, and a distinctive rising-sun emblem.
The history of Asahi Shoes dates back to 1892, when its predecessor was established in Kurume, Fukuoka Prefecture. In the early twentieth century, the company helped develop rubber-soled jika-tabi, combining traditional Japanese split-toe footwear with modern manufacturing techniques.
These practical shoes became essential for farmers, construction workers, and laborers throughout Japan, offering flexibility and durability while preserving a distinctly Japanese design.
Interestingly, the company's rubber technology also contributed to Japan's industrial development. Its tire division became the independent Bridgestone Tire Company in 1931, connecting this historic footwear manufacturer to one of the world's best-known tire brands.
The sign's narrow vertical format, striking red-and-blue typography, and traditional rising-sun imagery reflect the bold simplicity of Showa-era Japanese advertising. The old-fashioned characters used for “Authorized Retailer” add to its nostalgic charm.
Signs like this were once displayed outside footwear shops and neighborhood retailers, forming part of the everyday streetscape of Japan.
Today, this piece represents more than an old advertisement. It offers a fascinating glimpse into Japanese craftsmanship, traditional workwear, and the modernization of Japan's rubber industry.
An attractive collectible for enthusiasts of Japanese enamel signs, Showa-era advertising, vintage footwear, industrial history, and traditional Japanese design.
