Description from the seller
authentic Hungarian Iron Curtain Fragment – 1989 – Original Box, Wax Seal, Metal Plomb and Numbered Certificate
An original historical commemorative set from 1989, containing a fragment of barbed wire from the former Iron Curtain along the Hungarian–Austrian border, accompanied by its original numbered certificate of authenticity.
The barbed wire fragment, approximately 14 cm long, is mounted on a ribbon in the Hungarian national colours of red, white and green and preserved in its original fitted presentation case.
The inside of the lid contains a German-language certificate issued in Budapest in 1989, confirming that the enclosed barbed wire originated from the technical border barrier formerly installed along the Hungarian–Austrian border.
Certificate number: 100741
The certificate bears the name, military rank and signature of Colonel Engineer József Oláh, associated with the Hungarian People's Army's central technical materials organisation.
The set retains its original wax seal, bearing an impressed official mark, together with a smaller metal security seal (plomb) attached by sealing wire.
Historical significance – The Iron Curtain and German reunification
The dismantling of the Iron Curtain along the Hungarian–Austrian border in 1989 played a crucial role in the events that ultimately led to German reunification.
On 11 September 1989, Hungary opened its border to East German citizens, allowing tens of thousands of people to travel through Austria to West Germany.
This historic decision accelerated the crisis of the East German communist regime, contributed to the events leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall on 9 November 1989, and helped pave the way for German reunification on 3 October 1990.
Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl famously acknowledged Hungary's role, stating that Hungary had removed the first brick from the Berlin Wall.
This authentic historical commemorative set is a tangible reminder of the dismantling of the Iron Curtain and the end of Europe's Cold War division.
Dimensions
Original presentation case: approximately 16.8 × 7 × 2.5 cm
Barbed wire fragment: approximately 14 cm long
The set consists of several materials: metal (barbed wire, security seal and sealing wire), paper (original certificate), textile (Hungarian tricolour ribbon and interior lining), sealing wax (official wax seal), and a presentation case with a wooden structure and decorative outer covering.
The barbed wire shows age-related oxidation and surface corrosion.
The original presentation case has significant wear, including damage and losses to its outer covering, particularly along the edges and corners. Parts of the underlying structure are exposed. Unfortunately, it appears to have been stored in a damp basement.
The interior lining and Hungarian tricolour ribbon show signs of age, including staining and discolouration.
The German-language certificate remains legible, with some age-related discolouration.
The wax seal and metal plomb are present, as shown in the photographs.
Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an integral part of the description and accurately illustrate the condition of the set.
Collector's significance
A distinctive historical relic from 1989, preserved with its original presentation case, numbered certificate, wax seal and metal security plomb.
Retro, loft, industrial, bauhaus, art deco style.
Of course, it can also be collected in person in Budapest, Hungary.
I make an effort to use reused packaging materials and pack items carefully.
