André de Sinéty, Marquis of Lévis, created a porcelain factory on his property in Lurcy-Lévis, a few kilometres north of Couleuvre, on the eve of the Revolution. In the 19th century, from 1854-1855, this activity developed at Couleuvre, where a high quality kaolin was extracted. The proximity of the forests of Tronçais and Champroux, which could provide the wood for the ovens, was also an asset. At first the factory produced ordinary parts, but after the war of 1870, at the instigation of Paul Burguin, it embarked on more ambitious productions. After his death in 1891, production declined. From 1930, under the direction of Albert Laurent, the factory turned to more artistic productions (dinner services, vases, medicine pots, etc.). The decors are copied from old models, but the factory also caters for contemporary artists. Thus, Jean Cocteau entrusted him with 34 original drawings2. The Couleuvre factory acquires an international reputation.
