Saddle percussion carbine SHARPS model 1863. New model:
Total length: 99 cm
Barrel length: 55 cm
Load: 1 shot, breech loading
Calibre: .50-70 government
Serial number: C 44325
Rifle made between 1863 and 1865, in 60,000 units.
According to the serial number, this one dates from 1865.
It is one of the few 31098 Sharps rifles (1859, 63 and 65 model) modified in 1866 to receive the new .50-70 government cartridge.
Approximately 28,000 model 63s were modified.
They were modified because these rifles were highly favoured by the U.S. cavalry (sometimes preferred to Spencer repeaters).
They were used in the Indian Wars, replacing the less efficient saddle rifles like the Spencer .56-50 calibre.
All the metallic parts have their original tanning with traces of oxidation.
Unmarked cylinder head (re-bronzed) with some remnants of markings.
Pricked lock marked "Sharps Pat. Sept. 12TH 1848" and "R.S LAWRENCE PAT APRIL 12th 1859" (partly worn away).
Backsight adjuster marked "R.S. Lawrence Pat/Feb. 15th 1859"
The top of the barrel is marked near the bolt "NEW MODEL 1863".
Mechanism in very good condition, functional, firm lock.
Round barrel in very good condition, very good rifling grooves (almost a mirror finish).
