Paul Louis De Giafferri - L'Histoire du Costume Masculin - 1927
Full title: "Histoire du Costume Masculin Français de l'an 420 à l'an 1870"
First Edition 1927.
10 parts, each with pictorial wrappers, and 10 plates.
So there should be 100 color pochoir plates total.
Unfortunately, part one lacks plate 4 and 9 so there are in fact 98 pochoir plates and the set is incomplete. Part one does have a second copy of the cover, with its illustration.
Plates by O. Macaire, M.L. Nixon, Hébé, M.T. Grandchamps, etc. In addition to the plates, each part has 8 pages of text on the fashions of the period covered.
Original Boards / Portfolio. Blue cloth with pictorial overlay. Stightly strangely, despite the title being Costume Masculin, the cover illustration is of 10 dancing maidens in period costumes. Presumably the publishers used the same cover as for the sister volume of 10 fasicules of women's costume.
The portfolio has a little rubbing to the spine edges, and a splitting to the back edge, but still holding well. Silk ribbons are present. There is an owner's bookplate to the inside board.
Internally, the plates and pages are in good condition, with a little edgewear and darkening to the edges only. The last two parts (particularly the last) have splitting to the edge of the paper covers. Still overall very attractive.
Big heavy set - 4kg packed.
