This is a very large & heavy silver plated wine decanter/jug from 19th-century!
These large wine decanters historically were used to refill the chalice during communion. Often they are engraved with the name of the church or place of worship, this one is plain & has no engravings or decorations. The only ornate item is the elaborate S shaped handle.
This example is 33 cm tall & was made by Philip Ashberry & Sons of Sheffield. The company became a limited co' in 1899 & as this is missing the Ltd on their stamp, I believe it to be prior to that date.
In very good condition, the silver plate on the body of the jug is in good condition for the age!
The hinge still works as it should & the lid still sits correctly on the jug.
It's a lovely item that is quite impressive due to appearance & size. It makes an impressive decorative item even if not used for the intended purpose!
