Carsten Kröhn - Peter Behrens Architektur Architecture - 2013
This book is dedicated to the architectural part of Behren's work and claims to document the old master's entire built oeuvre for the first time.
The architect and designer Peter Behrens (1868 –1940) was one of the most important and influential designers in Germany in the first decades of the 20th century. Comparatively many of his numerous buildings, which range in style from Art Nouveau, Neo-Classicism, Expressionism and Modernism, have been preserved. Some are still considered architectural icons of their time today.
All projects are presented with one or two historical photographs. A variable number of images of the current state of the buildings that still exist are included.
Behrens used certain formal motifs - particularly vividly, for example, in the huge complex of the tobacco factory in Linz (1929 -1935) or the Hoechst administration building in Frankfurt am Main (1920 -1924).
In general, the book encourages us to rethink the relationship between Behrens and van der Rohe. Krohn shows, for example, that the legendary Mies Corner already appeared in two Behrens projects - in the buildings for the Frankfurt Gas Company (1910 - 1912) and in the German Embassy in St. Petersburg (1911 - 1913) - just at that time , in which Mies van der Rohe worked in Behren's office. What the two masters also have in common, as can be seen from numerous examples, is the lasting inspiration from the architecture of Friedrich Karl Schinkel and Frank Lloyd Wright.
In addition to the prominent buildings that are important in terms of architectural history, such as the Alexander and Berolinahaus on Berlin's Alexanderplatz and the AEG turbine hall in Berlin Moabit.
They are likely to be specialists and well-versed connoisseurs of Behren's work. For example, the synagogue in Žilina, Slovakia (1928 - 1931), or the redesign of the facade of the “Stern” department store in Zagreb (1927 - 1929), which bears witness to Behren's engagement with the De Stijl movement.
