The Sino-Japanese War Expeditionary Medal; On July 27th, 1939, the "Sino-Japanese War Expeditionary Medal Ordinance" (Imperial Ordinance No. 496) was established. This medal was awarded to those who served in the Second Sino-Japanese War. It is made of bronze, with the front surface of the medal featuring a bird (Yatagarasu: also known for its use in the current symbol of the Japan Football Association) spreading its wings widely with the Imperial Chrysanthemum Crest on its back. Two Rising Sun flags intersect below the bird, and are cast in bronze, spreading from left to right as if expanding upwards from the bottom. On the reverse side, the characters "支那事變" (Sino-Japanese Incident) are cast in seal script, with mountains depicted above the characters, clouds around the characters, and wave-like patterns cast below the characters. The ribbon accompanying the medal is woven with threads of five colors: blue, light blue, ochre, red, and vermilion. A small hook is attached to the back of the ribbon for fastening to clothing breast pockets, etc. A metal plate of the same material as the medal portion, bearing the characters "従軍記章" (Expeditionary Medal) in seal script, is attached to the ribbon.
